War Remnants Museum

Historical background of the Saigon War Remnants Museum

In the Nguyen Dynasty, this location was the place to build Khai Tuong Pagoda. By the time of the French invasion, the pagoda was demolished entirely by the French government to replace it with the mansion. In the following period, this place became an obstetric and gynecological hospital, a law office, etc.

It was only after 1975 when the country was liberated from the American empire, it became a museum that documents historical events, war traces, or exhibiting artifacts related to the fight against invaders.

The Tiger Cage

The Tiger Cage in the War Remnants Museum was rebuilt according to the Tiger Cage model at Con Dao prison. It includes 2 compartments, of which each is nearly 3m long, 2m wide, and 2 prisoner statues.

In Tiger Cage, patriotic communists used to be restrained in cells which were only about 5m2 wide, without beds or large windows. All they had to endure were darkness, humid, and stuffy air.

Moreover, Tiger Cage is also the place where the fierce torture scenes took place to destroy the will and power of patriotic people. The cage is considered to be the most terrible torture place of American troops for patriotic prisoners.

The area inside the museum

The ground floor area consists of the Multipurpose Room and the World supporting Vietnam resistance room.

The first floor consists of rooms of the Agent Orange Consequences in the American war of aggression in Vietnam, Invading war crimes, a movie room, and a meeting room.

The second floor includes rooms of Historical facts, Reminiscence (Photo collection of war correspondents who died in Indochina war), Agent Orange during the Vietnam War, White Dove (children's education room), and Vietnam - War and Peace.

Also, the museum has booths to display and introduce products of Vietnamese ethnic culture so visitors can buy them as souvenirs for friends and relatives.

From Ben Thanh market (District 1, Ho Chi Minh city), you head toward Le Lai street and turn right on Truong Dinh street. Keep going straight to Nguyen Thi Minh Khai street, then turn left via Le Quy Don street.

From Le Quy Don street, visitors turn left for a piece to the War Remnants Museum on Vo Van Tan street, District 3.
